Enchanted Cottage Glassworks
The Enchanted Cottage is a real place located on the bluffs of Lake Michigan in Sheboygan (of all places), Wisconsin. It is a place of whimsy and imagination.
My name is Ann J White. I live there with a pack of six feral dogs, which makes sense because I am a bit feral and reclusive myself. I am a museum educator at the John Michael Kohler Art Center where we collect, exhibit and preserve Art Environments at the Art Preserve. This inspires me to continue working on my home as an art environment - no wall or surface is safe from mosaic, glass creations, painting or other whimsical weirdness, With my first wall painting, my brother (who makes Monk seem normal) said, "You have ruined your home's resale value." Ha! That bus has long since departed. When I die, my home will either be a noted art environment or get bulldozed. And since I'll be dead, I won't care. For now - I create, and this is my studio. Which brings us to warm or fused glass. It took my kiln 10 years to make it from Florida, where I once lived, to Sheboygan because it did not fit into the moving van, and it took that long for a dear friend to drive to Florida and schlep it to Sheboygan. I admit, for the first year, I lived in fear of creating with it again. I know not why. Fear isn't always rational. But once I powered her up - she has dramatically changed my life and the Enchanted Cottage. My glass studio has taken over most of the first floor - especially the kitchen. My stove has become a workstation, so I am grateful for my friend, artist Anna Hawe, who often sends me a meal or three via porch pickup. On this website you will find a journal as I share my creations and my failures - my journey down this addictive path of warm glass. On the Gallery page, you can see samples of my art. |
